The Wolves Who Wear Our Crosses

“By their fruits you shall know them” - Matthew 7:16

Some of the most prominent voices in Christian, conservative spaces are not leading people to Christ, but rather to themselves.

We are living in an era marked by confusion, chaos and a deep spiritual hunger. In the midst of this decaying version of civilization, voices have emerged which have articulated our fears and principles in an ordered and even reverent manner. These voices carry the echo of Christian values but speak only in half-truths. So, while they drip honey, and preach discipline and morality, the fact is that they rarely preach the real truth of Christ crucified.

For decades we have sat and watched those who present themselves as figures of authority lie, exploit and destroy. One of the few appeals of the internet is that it provided the opportunity to shatter this illusion. Out of the disordered nature of our culture, the everyday man could step out and provide a voice of reason and successfully articulate the common-sense position of the majority. Only for them to suffer some sort of catastrophic blowback and become a martyr for the cause, solidifying their position within conservative circles.

It is thanks to this very disorder that we live in, that is has become normalized to see intellectuals then become heralded as the new Christian voices. As a result, the wolves learned to speak our same language, and many have stood by and welcomed it. These commentators are often elevated, even past true Christians, by mainstream media as they can fit into either camp. They may know the language and speak of logos and tradition, but always fall short of speaking about the Cross and repentance.  Over the years, many of the social issues that were pushed to the forefront of Christian and conservative spaces have allowed for non-Christians to become prominent voices in spaces they should never be leading. This cultural war walks parallel to the Christian path, and at times they may even overlap, but their destination is never truly the same.

But we are finally arriving at the moment where these two separate paths can no longer peacefully coexist. God always exposes the enemy, and any ill-intended intrusion has now become obvious to even the most passive of onlookers. On the internet, while performance often outpaces the truth, the truth will always catch up with the performer. Christians cannot allow the lines between the two to become blurred.

These imposters cannot be quoted like saints. They cannot be defended like martyrs. In the end, if they are unable to humbly follow Christ, they are nothing but pretenders. It is spiritually dangerous for Christians to embrace a leadership that mimics Christianity but lacks its truth.

Real Christianity is not compatible with either liberal or conservative political parties, both of which will compromise in the face of adversity and bend to the will of the masses. The truth does not bend, compromise, or change. Eventually, individualism and moral relativism will reveal the intentions behind these counterfeit voices.

We cannot survive as a society if we do not cling to the perpetual Cross. Political and social fads may come and go, but Christians cannot afford to elevate non-Christians to the position of leadership, or we risk trailing off our narrow path.
